We went to the zoo yesterday and had a great time. I went with a friend whose little boy is only a few months older and it was $2 Tuesday, so we were fine with only staying a little while. Annika enjoyed the shuttle and showed her enthusiasm by wriggling, kicking, and shoving all of her weight, sharply, into my sternum. The Portland Zoo recently had (one of the elephants had) a baby and there was a line that wrapped around, (in the shade!) so that we could see mama and baby inside. I didn't know how old the new elephant was, so while in line and we could see some of the elephants, I thought one that was a lot smaller than the others might be the baby. No. The baby is only, today, 18 days old. It was sleeping at his (hers?) mother's feet and looked SOO little. It was the cutest, really the cutest, thing ever. (At the zoo, not in comparison to my own baby. Mostly.) The guide was giving information as only a few of us entered the area at time. No flash photos and keep pretty quiet. And, as of yesterday morning, baby weighed in at 322lbs. 322lbs!!!!! It was tiny! Miniscule! As I marveled, the guide said, that if you keep in mind that mama weighed 7500lbs (!!!!!!!), it was easier to put into perspective. Wow.
Anyway, it was amazing. Annika growled at the tiger, having learned from riding on John's back when he is a tiger. Or lion. Or bear. She's pretty good.
We saw seals from an underwater vantage point. They were at least 8 feet long and gliding and swimming performing for us. They would glide along the glass and the little girls would scream and giggle and cheer. I felt like giggling and cheering, too! We saw a hippo and Annika and her friend stood on a little ledge and could look through the glass. Not sure if they ever saw the hippo, but they loved the perch. They could see the water and their own reflections and giggled and belly laughed and told each other hippo jokes. We saw a giraffe and zebras and lots of other things and went home happy. Annika was just as excited on the shuttle back to our car.
I'm trying to get Annika out and about now, because in January, with a new baby and the rain, I'm not sure we'll see the outside for months!
I really will post pictures soon! I just have to take some!

I hope her hippo jokes are nothing like her Daddy's Bugs Bunny jokes. Looking forward to seeing you in February!

A. Footprints in the ice cream.
